The Role

Ontario Plants Propagation Ltd. is seeking a dedicated Grower to join our team in producing high-quality vegetable seedlings. Reporting to the Head Grower, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing a designated section of the greenhouse, monitoring plant health, and ensuring optimal growing conditions. This role works closely with cross-functional teams to achieve productivity and quality targets in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Job Description / Responsibilities

  • Gather data for plant trials as directed
  • Responsible for growing activities in an assigned section of the greenhouse, including irrigation, pest control, and monitoring and maintaining the climate as directed
  • Mentor and train Junior and Assistant Growers and other greenhouse employees
  • Collect and maintain data records relating to crop health, environmental data, trials, and sanitation
  • Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity
  • Participate in quality and productivity improvement initiatives
  • Communicate regularly with the Head Grower and cross-functional teams to report progress, issues, and opportunities for improvement
  • Assist with implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to minimize crop loss and reduce pesticide use
  • Participate in seasonal planning and crop rotation activities to optimize greenhouse productivity and plant health
  • Maintain and adhere to all company policies and procedures
  • Help maintain a safe and clean workplace
  • Perform other tasks as may be assigned

Minimum Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering or completion of a post-secondary diploma in a related field
  • Minimum of two years of growing, greenhouse or related experience 
  • Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to create logically ordered objectives
  • Excellent communication, analytical, with problem-identification and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and motivate team members

Physical Location / Working Conditions 

  • Work location is in a rural area with limited access to public transportation candidates should have reliable means of transportation
  • 35 – 55 hours per week, shifts may vary between day and evening
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends when required, especially during peak seasons
  • Working in high temperatures
