Quality Matters

Ontario Plants Propagation is constantly introducing new innovations across the production facilities – from new hygiene measures, higher quality standards, and advanced plant monitoring equipment.

Always Minimizing Risk

The Red Zone

All bins, trays and carts from the production growers are returned to the red zone, so the risk of spreading of any viruses is greatest here. After all, there are a lot of hands touching the carts before they return to the plant grower and there also will have been contact with the crop, that may be contaminated.

Heat Exchanger

The washing line for bins and trays is specially equipped with a heat exchanger to provide sufficient hot water so that up to a thousand pieces can be washed per hour. There will be a special dock for trucks at the red zone, only for the delivery of carts and trays that return from our customers, without actually having to enter our building.

Longest Washing Line

The installation now washes up to 120 carts per hour. Adding an extra section to the line increases the contact time, which is important to effectively kill viruses such as Covid-19 and ToBRFV.

Quality Control

Strict hygiene measures apply not only to greenhouses but also to personnel, carts, shipping trays, and vehicles. Quality control is an ongoing process at Ontario Plants. Processes and plant health are under constant scrutiny on both the greenhouse floor and at the in-house laboratory.

Ontario Plants water filtration system is a well-designed, multi-staged system that proves effective and increases the efficacy of our UV treatment. The first stages of water treatment lie in filtration which provide key pretreatment before being treated with Hydrogen Peroxide and then dosed with a minimum of 250 mj/cm2 of UV light so that 100% disinfection can be achieved successfully. Using Ricoh, sand and cloth filtration systems, Ontario Plants achieves a filtration level of 0.2 micron. UV disinfected water samples are sent twice weekly to the lab for testing. This will verify the proper function of the equipment ensuring water quality is meeting the required standard held here at Ontario Plants. Our growers understand there is an increased emphasis for testing microbial loads and have included oxygen determinations as part of water quality. As a result, on premise daily water tests are conducted to monitor for proper hydrogen peroxide levels and dissolved oxygen levels in our irrigation water.

Ontario Plants Propagation facilities are located far from other greenhouse operators, ensuring that the growing environment is significantly less exposed to common growing pests and diseases.
